Many years ago, my partner Kelly and I met at a Mom’s Club. We were attorneys but we took a break from the law to raise our young children. We both wanted to practice but needed to have flexibility since both our husbands traveled for work and we needed to be there for our children. After many conversations about how to set up a law practice that would for for us, we decided to set up our practice as a mobile law office where we could set our own hours, work from home, and visit our clients at their homes and offices.
What is a mobile law practice?
It is a law practice that is available when and where your clients need you. Structuring your practice as a mobile law practice allows you the flexibility to go to your clients, to work from your home office or to move among different offices. With today’s technology, the options are unlimited.
One huge benefit was that we could keep our overhead low. We embraced technology to streamline our workload and enjoyed working the hours we wanted to work. As our practice grew, word spread. Clients loved our “house calls” and other attorneys wanted to know how they could set up their own “mobile law practice.”
We have written a practical “How To” manual for starting your own mobile law practice called “Law Office on A Laptop: How to Set Up Your Own Successful Mobile Law Practice.” It can be found on Amazon.com. It is a step-by-step guide on how to set up a law practice with special considerations for the attorneys on the go. It includes:
- Considerations For Your Practice
- Setting up Forms and Procedures
- Evaluating Systems and Software
- Marketing Yourself and Getting Clients
- State-by-State Guide for Law Practice Management
- Goals + Opportunities Checklist
- Top 10 Tips for a Successful Solo Law Practice
We are excited to provide encouragement and practical advice from our experiences and help other attorneys “Go Solo.”
